| Club Meetings A club meeting is held on the first Monday of every month except January. There is a meeting even if the Monday is a public holiday (Waitangi Day, Easter Monday, Queen's Birthday, Opening Day). Meetings are held at the Apollon Clubrooms, 75 Adelaide road, newtown (200 m south of Basin Reserve - parking available at Newbolds), commencing at 7:30pm. Click here for a map to the clubrooms. Guest Speakers Except for the Annual General Meeting (May) and the Annual Auction (November) most meetings feature a guest speaker. Notable speakers in recent years include; Professional fishing guides: Les Hill, Jack McKenzie, Frank and Carol Harwood, Dave Hern, Hugh McDowell, Zane Mirfin. Fish & Game and DoC personnel; Bryce Johnson, Peter Taylor, Steve Smith, Greg Lydon, David Moate, and Michel Dedual. Fly fishing authors John McInnes and Alex Gillett. Fly fishing trade and fly shop personalities; Stella Gordon (The Store), Roger Smailes (Hunting & Fishing), Gary Kemsley (Umpqua), Simon O'Connor (Kilwell). Local Government; Mark Blumsky (Mayor of Wellington). Club members also feature, sharing their experiences of fly fishing exotic and unusual locations. Occassionally members offer tips and advice on fly fishing specific situations, like Taupo or the Wainuiomata River. Auctions The annual auction is an important source of revenue for the club and assists in keeping subscriptions at a low level. A wide variety of new and used fly fishing related items are available at reasonable cost. Items are sourced within the club and from fly fishing stores. Flies tied by members are very popular as they suit local fishing conditions. Auction items are either; donated, sold with no reserve and the club taking 10%, or, sold on reserve with the club taking 10% or anything over the reserve. There is a Fly and Book auction at the July meeting. Profits from this auction are available to support club members at National and International fly fishing competitions. Library The club library is available at club meetings for members to borrow items. There are approximately 130 fly fishing books and videos. It is important each library card is filled out, when borrowed, and returned. There is no cost and members are encouraged to return borrowed items at the next club meeting. The librarian will accept donations of fly fishing books or suggestions for future purchases. Visitors Visitors are most welcome and may attend any club meeting. Committee Meetings There is a meeting for the club's management committee on the second Monday of each month (except January). Meetings are usually held at the Walrus Gallery, cnr Taranaki & Jessie Streets. Click here for a map to Walrus Gallery. Any club member who has matters which they believe should be considered by the committee may discuss them with a committee member by phone, or at a club meeting, or contact the secretary. |
